Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Age Matrix change?

The Age Matrix change refers to the shift from organizing teams by calendar birth year (January 1 - December 31) to organizing teams based on a seasonal year (August 1 - July 31). This aligns youth soccer age groups more closely with school grade groupings.

Why is U.S. Soccer making this change?

The goal is to better align player development with school-year cohorts, reduce roster movement, improve social and academic alignment, and minimize the number of "trapped" players & athletes who remain in youth soccer while most of their classmates graduate.

When does this change take effect?

The new age grouping structure will begin with the 2026-2027 season. The current 2025-2026 season will continue to operate under the existing birth-year format.

Who does this change affect?

This change affects all competitive youth soccer programs nationwide, including regional leagues, national leagues, and elite platforms. Recreational programs may vary based on local league rules.

How will my player's age group be determined?

Players will now be grouped based on their age as of August 1 of each seasonal year. For example, players born between August 1, 2013 and July 31, 2014 will form one age group.

Will players be required to change teams?

Possibly. Some players may shift age groups based on their birth date relative to the new August 1 cutoff. Our staff will work carefully to evaluate each roster and ensure competitive balance, appropriate development, and a positive team environment.

Does this change improve player development?

Yes. Research and feedback from clubs, leagues, and governing bodies indicate that aligning teams by school year enhances social development, academic balance, training consistency, and long-term player retention.

How is Syracuse Development Academy preparing?

Our coaching and technical staff are proactively planning roster evaluations, player assessments, training structures, and communication strategies to ensure a smooth transition. We will provide families with clear timelines and individual guidance as we approach the change.
