Pre-Academy Program Overview

Empire UnitedSDA Syracuse

Purpose:  The Pre-Academy program is in response to US Soccer’s initiative to develop more players, beginning at younger ages.  As a member of the US Soccer Development Academy, Empire United is taking initiative to develop those players who have the ambition and aspirations to become a world class player, and to contribute to Youth National Teams and competitive college soccer programs during their career.

What is the Boys Pre-Academy Program?

The Pre-Academy is a supplemental training program that will train calendar year pools one time per week for three 8-week sessions beginning in September.  Each session will consist of eight training sessions from the Empire United Development Academy staff and/or Directors of Coaching.  Training sessions will take place on weekends (Saturdays whenever possible) at the Empire United Soccer Complex in Rochester (1520 John Street, West Henrietta, NY).

The 2016/17 Pre-Academy training pools will include the 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 birth years.

The three 8-week sessions will follow these general time periods:

  • Session I – September/October
  • Session II – November/December
  • Session III – January/February

Can players still play school/other sports if chosen for the Pre-Academy Program?

Yes!  These training sessions are 1x per week, most likely on Saturdays.  Most Modified school sports do not have a heavy commitment on weekends which will allow for them to be a part of the Pre-Academy while participating in school sports.

How are the players chosen for the Pre-Academy Program?

There will be a tryout period to identify those players who will be invited to the first of the three 8-week sessions.  For the second and third sessions, players will be selected and invited by the staff.  Therefore, each 8-week session could consist of some different players.  However, some players will be chosen to participate in all three sessions, and some may be chosen for one or two of the 8-week sessions.

Are there any other commitments to be part of the Pre-Academy Program?

Yes.  Any 2002 and 2003 players will need to be a rostered Empire United Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara, or SDA player for the season in which they wish to participate in the program.

For any 2004 and 2005 players, while you are highly encouraged to be rostered for an Empire United Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara, or SDA team, they will be allowed to participate if not rostered with any of those teams.

In addition, select players from within each pool will be invited to participate in US Soccer Development Academy events, as follows:

  • 2002’s – Three 8-week Pre-Academy Program sessions AND/OR full-time FALL SEASON training schedule, to include the following:
    • 3-4 training sessions per week through early November
    • Two away weekends versus Development Academy opponents, (one in September, one in October)
    • US Soccer Development Academy Regional Showcase (November)
    • In addition, some 2002’s will also be invited to the US Soccer Development Academy Futsal Event (February) and the US Soccer Development Academy National Showcase (June)
  • 2003’s – Three 8-week Pre-Academy Program sessions, and competitions for select players which include the following:

Each of the three 8-week sessions will have the following costs:

  • $150.00 (2016/17 Empire United rostered players)
  • $185.00 (non-Empire United rostered players)

Full-time fall programming (2002’s) will have a different/additional cost structure.  This information will be released to all players selected for this program.
