Time to plan for next season — SDA tryouts take place in July

The second half of July is devoted to tryout sessions for Central New York soccer enthusiasts who want to train during the 2017-2018 season with the Syracuse Development Academy.

Starting July 17, boys and girls born in 2007, 2008 and 2009 will try out at the SDA Center, 7950 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse. Older players, with birth years from 2006 to 1999, will try out at Solvay High School, 600 Gertrude Ave. in Solvay.

Tryout dates and times for each age level are posted on the SDA Website.

Tryouts consist of two 90-minute training sessions, during which coaches will evaluate players. Coaches prefer that players attend both sessions for a full evaluation.

“We realize that summers are full of other obligations, and we don’t want anyone to be left out because of a scheduling conflict,” says Mike Paolini, the director of soccer. He invites players or their parents to contact him directly at with scheduling questions.

Soon after tryout sessions are complete, coaches notify players about whether they are selected to train on their team. Age groups typically comprise more than enough players to field a team, or sometimes two.

Each age group trains twice a week throughout the season, which begins in September for players up to age 12. Older teams start training the first week of November, after the high school seasons wrap up.
